Hatching a thriving poultry business

Jason Nethercott and his wife Giuliana launched Talking Hens in 2012, driven by a passion for business and a universally appreciated product: the humble egg. Starting with weekend sales from a makeshift shop on their Keysborough family farm and at farmers’ markets, their business rapidly grew.

This early success saw Jason deepening his expertise in keeping chickens happy and laying well, naturally leading to conversations and advice for his customers. This organic shift supported the eventual move to Merricks, allowing the business to transition from selling eggs to focusing exclusively on the hens that lay them.

Today, Talking Hens supplies suburban keepers with a wide range of popular chicken breeds, quality feeds, and essential poultry equipment. Jasonโ€™s commitment to customer service and education has made the business a trusted source of support and know-how for the backyard hen community.

His latest pioneering endeavour is writing a book on applying Artificial Intelligence to troubleshooting common backyard chicken issues. This project isn’t about letting AI do all the work; it’s about Jason’s careful guidance and structuring of AI’s approach to ensure it arrives at the very best practical solutions for his customers.
