For 50 years, Mornington Peninsula Dental Clinic has helped local families care for their teeth and gums through every stage of life. While dentistry has changed significantly during that time, one principle has remained central to the practice: prevention is the foundation of good oral health.
Founded by Dr John Osborne in 1976, the clinic began with a commitment to good, honest dentistry, grounded in integrity, compassion and genuine care. Regular check-ups, early intervention and practical advice were an important part of that philosophy from the beginning.
Over the following decades, the clinic became one of Mornington’s longest-standing privately owned dental practices. Children who first attended with their parents returned as adults, later bringing their own children and grandchildren. Those long-term relationships gave the team the opportunity to support patients’ oral health over many years, not simply when something went wrong.
In 2012, Dr Osborne welcomed Dr David Laskey to the clinic. Born in Wales and trained in the UK, David shared the same patient-first approach and belief in ethical, preventive care.
They worked together for six years, combining longstanding community care with contemporary dental techniques and technology. As David recalls: “We were a good team because we shared a passion for ethical, patient-centred care.”
When Dr Osborne retired in 2020, he wanted the clinic to remain privately owned, locally focused and true to its roots. He entrusted the practice to David, who continues to lead it today with the support of a skilled and caring team.
Preventive care remains at the heart of the clinic. Regular dental check-ups allow dentists to assess teeth and gums and identify early signs of decay, gum concerns, tooth wear, cracks and other changes. Finding concerns early can provide more options and help prevent problems from becoming more complex.
These appointments are not only about cleaning teeth. They are an opportunity for patients to understand what is happening in their mouths, discuss any changes or concerns and receive advice suited to their individual needs.
Preventive care is valuable at every age. It helps children build healthy habits, supports adults through busy working and family years, and assists older patients in maintaining comfort, function and quality of life.
Many private health insurance policies include dental extras that may contribute towards check-ups, cleans, X-rays and other preventive services, depending on the policy. Mornington Peninsula Dental Clinic works with several health funds, including Bupa, HCF, nib, Defence Health and Medibank Private.
As the clinic celebrates 50 years and looks to the future, its commitment remains unchanged: to provide honest advice, careful treatment and preventive care that helps local families protect their oral health for the future.
