Peninsula School of Dance has been part of the cultural fabric of the Mornington Peninsula for 65 years, inspiring generations of young dancers and creating connections that extend well beyond the studio.
The story began in 1961, when Sandra Allan OAM founded Rosebud Ballet School with just 23 students and a pianist in a local hall. What started as a small community dance school has grown into a multi-generational performing arts institution, today operating as Peninsula School of Dance under the leadership of Melanie Gard.
Thousands of students and families have passed through its doors. Some have pursued careers in dance and the performing arts, while many others have carried with them the confidence, friendships and memories formed during their time at the school. Today, former students are returning with children of their own, continuing a connection that can span several generations.
To mark its 65th anniversary, Peninsula School of Dance is looking both back and forward with the launch of the PSD Legacy Project. The project will bring together the photographs, videos, programs, news articles, artefacts and personal stories that document the school’s history. Many of these pieces are currently held by past students, families and members of the community, making their preservation an important part of ensuring the story is not lost over time.
Plans include professionally digitising the school’s archives, producing a commemorative documentary and book, creating a permanent Legacy Recognition installation at the studio and commissioning a special alumni performance.
The milestone will be celebrated at Peninsula School of Dance’s 65th Anniversary Gala at RACV Cape Schanck Resort on Saturday, October 3. Hosted by alumnus Jason Coleman, the evening will bring together past and present families, alumni and community leaders while officially launching the Legacy Project.
More than an anniversary, the occasion celebrates the people, families and community that have shaped Peninsula School of Dance across 65 years, while preserving those stories for the generations to come.
