Sharing the joy of cooking

by Jacqui Bialocki

Tucked into the rolling hills of Main Ridge, Frog Hollow Kitchen offers one of the Peninsula’s most intimate and enriching culinary experiences.

At first glance it appears to be a cooking school. Spend a few hours with owner Ciara Griffiths, however, and it reveals itself as something far more personal: an invitation into her kitchen, her garden, and her deeply held belief that food is meant to be shared generously and without fuss.

The true essence of Frog Hollow Kitchen is connection: to food and where it comes from, to the land it grows on, and to the people gathered around the table. Ciara’s approach is relaxed and inclusive, gently dismantling the idea that cooking and entertaining need to be complicated or intimidating. Here, food is joyful, intuitive and deeply satisfying, especially when enjoyed together.

Ciara’s love of cooking and hosting was shaped early. One of seven children born to an Irish father and Australian mother, she grew up in a home where feeding a crowd was second nature. Her mother’s ability to nourish family and friends with ease left an impression. At 16, Ciara moved to Melbourne, where she completed her schooling, studied business, met her husband, Grant, and raised their three sons.

About 30 years ago, a lunch invitation to Main Ridge changed the course of her life. The lush green hills stirred memories of Ireland and awakened a longing for land, vines, and a slower, more grounded way of living. That dream became Frog Hollow Farm. Grant’s fondness for frogs meant the existing name of the property was instantly attractive, and many reside in the property’s dam. The farm grew to include 4ha of pinot gris and pinot noir vines, now carefully tended by Foxeys Hangout. What began as a vision gradually became home.

In 2023, after the loss of her husband and with her sons having moved interstate, Ciara found herself at a crossroads. When the farm manager’s house became vacant, inspiration struck. That space became Frog Hollow Kitchen, a place to cook, teach, gather and give back.

Both beautiful and practical, the kitchen invites guests to gather around the bench, glass in hand, while Ciara prepares lunch and shares her knowledge. Her teaching style is conversational and generous, layered with practical tips, clever shortcuts and insights learnt through years of experience. “Most of the time it’s like talking to a group of girlfriends,” she said.

Herbs and vegetables – fresh from Ciara’s garden whenever possible – are paired with seasonal produce from trusted growers. “We’re incredibly spoilt here on the Peninsula; the quality and variety of produce is extraordinary.” Once the food is prepared, guests sit down to a shared meal. Stories are exchanged, confidence grows, and techniques are absorbed effortlessly. Frog Hollow Kitchen is not about perfection. It is about pleasure, generosity, and the simple joy of sharing what you know.

Ciara Griffiths has created something quietly special and deeply personal. Take a friend along; you will leave nourished in every sense. Discover more at froghollowkitchen.com.au
