Creativity thrives on opportunity. For emerging artists on the Mornington Peninsula, access to experienced creatives makes all the difference. Mornington Peninsula Shire’s Young Creators Mentorship Program gives young creatives the opportunity to take meaningful steps towards creative careers.
Funded by VicHealth, the program connects creatives aged 18-25 with established professional artists for one-on-one mentorship. Piloted in 2023, arts development officer Bridey Ellis created this program, noticing a gap in creative arts support for young people, and says the aim is to support skill development in the arts while strengthening wellbeing and connection. “The mentorship builds confidence, invests in skills development and a sense of belonging,” she said. “It also helps young people broaden their professional networks.”
For Chisholm students, opportunities like this often begin in the classroom. Through a presentation delivered by Mornington Peninsula Shire Arts and Culture, two Diploma of Visual Arts students, Eadie and Nina, were encouraged to apply and successfully secured places in the program.
Painter Eadie says working closely with her mentor has boosted her confidence. “I was intimidated by the art world, but have since flourished with my mentor’s encouragement and genuine engagement.”
Illustrator Nina says the mentorship is helping her find direction. “The program has allowed me to dive deeper into the artistic world and be guided by an experienced creator,” Nina said. “I’ve seen gradual improvements in my practice and the ability to develop my skills.”
Chisholm’s manager of art, design and environment, Michelle Crotty, said opportunities like this were invaluable for students and the region alike. “We now have strong links with the shire’s creative network and will continue to build on opportunities in 2026.”
