Helping young people find their future close to home

Finding the right career path can be challenging, especially for young people navigating study, training and work for the first time. Thanks to a partnership between Chisholm Institute and Mornington Peninsula Shire, local young people now have free access to professional career guidance right in the heart of Rosebud.

Delivered monthly from the Tounnin Wominjeka Youth Hub, the free career counselling service provides young people aged 15 to 20 with personalised guidance, helping them navigate education, training and employment with confidence.

Chisholm Skills and Jobs Centre manager Clint Johnson said bringing the service to Rosebud was about making quality career support more accessible for Peninsula families. “Having this service makes it easier for local young people to access professional career support close to home,” he said.

Appointments are tailored to each individual, whether they’re choosing between courses, considering an apprenticeship or simply unsure where to begin. “We’re here to provide the support that’s right for that person,” Clint said. “Sometimes one conversation is enough, while others benefit from exploring their options over time.”

The service also helps young people better understand the local job market, explore different career pathways and connect with employment opportunities and other support services. Rather than steering people towards one course or provider, the focus is on helping them make informed decisions based on their interests, strengths and the opportunities available.

“You don’t need to have everything figured out,” Clint said. “We’re here to help people explore their options and take that first step.”

As the Mornington Peninsula continues to grow, initiatives like this help ensure local young people can access the guidance they need, when and where it matters most. By connecting them with the right advice, opportunities and support, the partnership is investing in the Peninsula’s future workforce – one conversation at a time.
