Mornington Peninsula Shire Council will be led by a female team after new councillors Despi O’Connor and Sarah Race were elected to the top positions. “Oh my goodness! Heart and head and thinking about this for the last 48 hours has been huge,” Cr O’Connor said, adding she would lead with compassion and empathy while embracing the collective wisdom of the council.
Cr Race vowed to work tirelessly with fellow councillors to make the municipality the best it could be.
High-profile Watson Ward councillor and former actor Paul Mercurio started his new civic role with a “Strewth!” after being sworn in, thanking the ratepayers who voted for him and saying he would do them proud.
New councillor Anthony Marsh summed up the attitude of all when he said: “I can’t wait to get stuck into it.”
Cr Debra Mar echoed fellow councillors as she promised to serve the community. She said the civic leaders had an obligation to leave the planet better than they found it, noting the critical issue of climate change and the need to protect the green wedge and wildlife.
Cr Lisa Dixon said she was thrilled, humbled and delighted to be part of the new council.
