A police officer stripped down to his underpants and swam out to a woman stranded on a boat off Capel Sound last night after what was believed to be an attempted alcohol raid.
Police were called about 7.30pm after reports of two intoxicated people seen swimming out to the boat moored about 200m offshore. The man and woman allegedly ransacked the boat looking for alcohol, but after coming up empty-handed, the man abandoned the search and managed to swim safely back to the beach. The woman, however, apparently decided she was too drunk to make it back so she stayed aboard the boat.
Concerned for the woman’s safety after receiving reports that she was seen clinging to the back of the boat, the officer stripped to his undies, swam out to the boat and helped her to shore.
Police said methamphetamines, cannabis and Valium were found in the woman’s handbag, which she had left on the beach, and she was charged with three counts of possessing a drug of dependence, being drunk and disorderly in a public place, tampering with a vessel, attempting to take charge of a vessel while under the influence of alcohol, and committing an indictable offence while on bail.
The 46-year-old Rosebud woman was remanded in custody to appear before Frankston Magistrates Court this morning. The 59-year-old man is expected to be fined for illegal use of a vehicle.
