Methane-emitting cows are one of the biggest producers of greenhouse gases on the planet – but Burger King is doing something about it. Realising its business is inextricably linked to cows, the fast food giant has put its advertising dollar where its flatulence is in a new ad to show it’s serious about the issue.

The all-singing, all-yodelling ad highlights Burger King’s efforts to reduce methane emissions by introducing lemongrass to its cows’ diets after scientists determined that the consumption of just 100g of lemongrass a day can reduce a cow’s methane emissions by a third.

The new lemongrass-fed beef will be used in Whoppers at several of the burger chain’s US restaurants from next Tuesday.

Fernando Machado, Burger King’s global chief marketing officer, said: “If the whole industry – from farmers, meat suppliers, and other brands – join us, we can increase scale and collectively help reduce methane emissions that affect climate change.”
