Unmarked Graves Named

Unmarked Graves Named

For the first time since 1850s, this installation will help to name 241 people buried in unmarked graves at the Point Nepean Cemetery. Coinciding with the current times of pandemic and the immense loss of life around the world, this project seeks to pay tribute and bring back some dignity to people who lost their lives under similar circumstances about 170 years ago. A timely reminder of history constantly repeating itself and the old quarantine station and cemetery a poignant place to connect these events.

A special guest Janet South from Nepean Historic Society will shed light on research she did helping Frank South compiling this list of names in 1995, now rediscovered by Nina Sanadze.

Another special guest David McRae, is one of 800 descendants of Christopher McRae (born approx. 1935), who was a pandemic survivor with an inspirational story. Yet, Christopher’s family is buried in one of the prominent surviving graves at the cemetery and David will share with us the incredible story. David will join us via Facetime.
