Book-lovers are turning the page on lockdown boredom thanks to J.K. Rowling’s famous boy wizard and former US First Lady Michelle Obama. Two of Rowling’s Harry Potter books, along with Obama’s memoir Becoming, have topped the ‘most borrowed’ eAudio and eBook lists compiled by Mornington Peninsula Shire librarians.

Andy Griffiths’ The 104-Storey Treehouse and Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief struck a chord with children and young adults, while older bookworms picked out Christian White’s Nowhere Child and Sally Rooney’s Normal People.

“It’s been fantastic to see so many people turning to eBooks and eAudio books to sustain them during lockdown,” said Peninsula Libraries’ arts and culture manager, Karina Lamb. “Spending an extended period of time at home tends to make us more reflective, and literature is a great way to get a fresh perspective on some of the big questions of life.”

Ms Lamb said keen readers also flocked to libraries to grab physical copies of books in the final day before lockdown. “We had a record number of people attend and borrow physical books with strict social distancing and safety measures in place,” she said. Mornington Library (4325) had the most loans and renewals on the final day, followed by Rosebud (3960), Hastings (2311) and Somerville (918).

Library staff have also created a social hub featuring many activities for those spending more time at home.
