Arts Access Victoria has brought the work of peninsula artists living with a disability to life in a photographic exhibition currently in the Mornington Library foyer titled Avenue of Puppets: Volatile Bodies. It is an expression of the artists’ bodies interacting with the physical and metaphysical environment.
During 2015, Art About artists shared with each other their stories and formed marionette puppets with mixed mediums including papier-mache, paint and fabric. Each marionette in the Art About troupe is an expression of the artist’s identity and story. Infused with tales of travel, magic making and dreams of being just like Bond, Supergirl and ABBA, these puppet-objects took on new barrier-free lives of their own.
Photographing each marionette for Avenue of Puppets and including the hand of their maker captures, in portraiture, both artist and artwork as one. Avenue of Puppets: Volatile Bodies is on display until June 23 as part of Arts Access Victoria’s public exhibition suite. Art About is a visual arts program for people with a disability on the Mornington Peninsula. Art About meets at the Seawinds Community Hub studio in Rosebud West.
