Two star-crossed lovers who took a joyride to Arthurs Seat on Monday to take in the sunset got more than they bargained for. Police decided to investigate when they observed the pair adopting a Titanic pose – a la Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet – at the scenic lookout.

“Their love for each other must have been so strong they forgot that the vehicle they were in had cancelled registration, the wrong number plates were affixed and that the male driver didn’t have a licence,” police wrote in an online post. The vehicle was impounded for 30 days and the driver will be summonsed to appear in court.

The 25-year-old Lancefield man and the 24-year-old Seaford woman were also found to be in breach of the directions issued by chief health officer Professor Brett Sutton, and were both issued with $1652 penalty notices.  The directions by Prof Sutton under the state of emergency declared in Victoria have been enacted to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

“All in all, a memorable evening that they will no doubt remember for years to come,” police wrote. “When able to do so legally, please drive safely.”
