Texture is a big part of this Rosebud painter’s process. So too is colour, form and light. He’s right in the heart of it and this passion for creation glows from his finished pieces, which grow from a real-time sense of place and the space where the imagination lies.
“I’ve been drawing since I could pick up a pencil. I did design and advertising at RMIT, but went on to do sculpture using wire and steel for 10 years after mucking around with a coat hanger one day at Mum’s. She’s an artist too. I only picked up the brush around five years ago and just got hooked,” explains this laid-back father of three.
“I guess it’s the process of understanding colour that thrills me. My next exhibition is a bit different in that it’s based on real places instead of a dreamed landscape inspired by nature and my kids.”
You can see a lot of Paul McIntyre’s design and advertising roots in his paintings. But there’s also a fluid free-fall into a warm sensory world filled with story and unmistakable ties to family and location.
Fall into Paul’s multi-layered visual vistas from September 8 at Manyung Gallery Mount Eliza – the perfect place to view art for art’s sake.
