Teen driver clocked at 215km/h on Mornington freeway

A P-plater allegedly driving at more than double the speed limit was one of two motorists caught speeding on the Mornington Peninsula Freeway overnight.

Somerville Highway Patrol members were carrying out speed checks in the north-bound lanes of the freeway when they clocked a Volkswagen Golf GTI travelling at 215km/h at Dromana shortly after midnight. The 18-year-old Mill Park man had his vehicle impounded for 30 days and is expected to be charged on summons with speeding.

Less than 90 minutes later, the same highway patrol unit stopped a vehicle allegedly travelling at 172km/h. The 37-year-old driver from McCrae also had his vehicle impounded for 30 days and is expected to front court charged with speeding.
