If you’re fed up with trying to find a carpark in Main St, Mornington Peninsula Shire has some good news: the shopping precinct is about to get in-ground parking sensors in a bid to discourage motorists from overstaying their time limit.

Last December, 100 sensors were installed in side streets as part of a six-month trial of smart parking in Mornington. With Main St open again after the COVID-19 lockdown, the shire is moving half the sensors to carparks between the Esplanade and Barkly St.

Mayor Despi O’Connor said that between January and February the sensors had detected 6700 vehicles left in side street carparks longer than the permitted period, including 2400 that were parked more than 30 minutes past the prescribed time limit. “We are confident this smart parking technology will help us to increase parking availability and improve convenience and fairness for drivers,” Cr O’Connor said.

The in-ground sensors detect whether a parking bay is occupied or available, and if data from the sensors indicates a pattern of time limits being exceeded, traffic officers may increase patrols in those areas. Mornington is the second township on the Peninsula after Rye to trial smart parking. You can learn more about the trials here.
