A range of exciting new Aboriginal art from around Australia will feature at Whistlewood Gallery, Shoreham in two open weekends in March and a unique new project that opens at Easter.

“We’ve had a very busy summer, and art centres are rushing us new works for our autumn showings,” says Whistlewood’s co-curator Susan McCulloch. “We’re very excited about gorgeous colourful paintings by some younger generation artists who we’ve not shown before as well as medium and larger scale works by many well established artists.”

Highlight of the month will be the McCullochs Autumn Salon at Easter, which combines outstanding Aboriginal paintings with the launch exhibition of more than 100 pieces of resin, silver, bead and natural material jewellery and small objects from a new nationwide Indigenous jewellery project. Short films detail the traditions, techniques and sources of traditional Anangu jewellery and the studio workshops.

Liritja: The Indigenous Jewellery Project is the brainchild of Whistlewood co-curator Emily McCulloch Childs who is linking up with contemporary jewellery galleries and jewellers to connect with Indigenous art centres across Australia.

“Jewellery is one of the strongest traditions in Indigenous Australian cultures, stretching back tens of thousands of years,” says McCulloch Childs. “The project encompasses research into Indigenous jewellery traditions and practice, workshops for developing new skills and techniques and exhibitions of jewellery and small objects made in these workshops.”

The project’s workshops have included those at Erub Erwer Meta Art Centre, in Erub (Darnley Island), Torres Strait Islands, Ernabella Arts in the APY Lands and Ikuntji Artists at Haasts Bluff, Western Desert. Workshop artists have included Melbourne jewellery gallery Pieces of Eight’s artists, resin specialist Kate Rohde and Sydney contemporary jeweller and lecturer Melinda Young.

Work made at Ernabella and Ikuntji were shown in an exhibition curated by McCulloch Childs at Adelaide’s prestigious JamFactory as part of the inaugural Tarnanthi Festival in October last year.

Now a wide range of new works will launch Liritja: The Indigenous Jewellery Project at Whistlewood at Easter. The exhibition is to be opened by Peninsula broadcaster Sally Baillieu of RPP FM on Saturday March 26 at 3 pm.
