This sequel starts off where Maleficent (2014) finished. Angelina Jolie reprises her role of Maleficent. She’s without doubt the perfect casting decision with her ability to go from vengeful villain to loving and caring godmother at the drop of a hat. Likewise Elle Fanning, who blossoms as her character transitions from the young Aurora to Queen of the Moors. Joining the cast and making the leading ladies a powerful trio is Michelle Pfeiffer as Queen Ingrith.

This instalment follows Maleficent and her goddaughter Aurora as they begin to question very complicated family ties that continue to keep them together while also forcing them apart. Prince Phillip, played by Harris Dickinson, unfortunately gets to experience this first-hand as well. Several dark new forces take the audience on an unexpected journey as impending nuptials loom for the once-happy couple, Aurora and Prince Phillip.

It was heart-warming to watch the one-of-a-kind Maleficent encounter something she’d never considered — more of her kind. Her new allies fuel her desire to follow Aurora’s passion for setting everything right and creating peace. The audience gets to watch the cheerful and cheeky side of Maleficent reappear that they hadn’t witnessed since the beginning of the first film. That’s mostly thanks to Diaval (Sam Riley), her minion turned friend who is sometimes human and sometimes a crow and who provides plenty of comic relief.

This sequel delivers action scenes throughout the movie and ultimately ends with a large battle. Parents need not worry about gory deaths with this one because audiences discover that once fairies die they turn into beautiful flowers and plants or a cloud of bright red smoke.

Yes, Disney delivers once again.
