A spectacular 1.2ha garden at Main Ridge will be in full autumn glory when it opens to the public next month with Open Gardens Victoria.
Akenfield, at 237 Barkers Rd, Main Ridge, is a truly beautiful garden. Once an apple orchard, it lies in the picturesque valley of Main Creek with a micro-climate and soil composition not dissimilar to those of Mount Macedon. The garden is blessed with stunning mature trees – among them oaks, elms, beech, eucalypts and camellias – planted over the decades by successive owners.
The garden descends to Main Creek in a series of lawn terraces, creating beautiful vistas and defined and linked by tree-lined walks, hedges and magnificent stone steps.
Special features include small Irish knot gardens just above the house and two century-old camellia trees. A lovely arching crab apple walk leads to an intimate space with a delightful bench seat built into a curved stone retaining wall. A picking garden above the vegetable patch provides cut flowers for the house.
Akenfield is open from 10am-4.30pm on Saturday, May 5, and Sunday, May 6. Entry is $10 for adults, $5 for students and free for children under 18. Details: opengardensvictoria.org.au
