Last year there were 390 requests for assistance from Peninsula residents under the age of 25 who were experiencing homelessness. To help raise awareness of this issue, Mornington Peninsula Shire is encouraging our community to support Sleep In Your Car 2021, an initiative by Fusion Mornington Peninsula.
Sleep In Your Car – an annual event during Homelessness Week – is going virtual this year from 5.30pm on Saturday, August 7. You’re encouraged to give up your beds for the night in favour of sleeping in your car at home or a tent in your yard. There will be community involvement through interactive online experiences, so jump online to enjoy live music and listen to guest speakers to better understand homelessness.
The theme this year is It Takes a Village, reflecting the reliance of young people on their communities to be safe and caring places where they can access support to prevent homelessness. This year Fusion Mornington Peninsula aims to raise $27,000. By taking part in Sleep In Your Car, you will be raising crucial money to support and prevent young people experiencing homelessness on our Peninsula.
“It’s so important to bring awareness to the issue of youth homelessness on our Peninsula, especially during the winter months,” Mayor Despi O’Connor said. “We go home to our warm houses, yet there are hundreds of young people doing it tough out there. We encourage everyone to get involved and learn more – it takes a village.”
