All nature is but art…- 18th Century English poet Alexander Pope from his Essay on Man

Master print maker and artist Dianne Fogwell likes to build nests around her. Her home is a creative place – Dianne’s son Jack and his funk band are playing in the music room and her husband Mark is working in his studio while we chat on the phone about the sensory pleasure of artist books, studio solitude, pollination (in nature and of ideas), shimmering surfaces disguising the deep and artists being the grand observers.

All is as it should be.

It is easy to see how this Canberra School of Art student (graduated 1980), lecturer in foundation, printmaking and Graphic Investigation studies 1981-1996 and finally lecturer in charge of the Edition + Artists Book Studio ANU School of Art from 1996-2005 gets things done.

She’s not afraid of an intense dialogue with ideas. This Wollongong girl (who was brought up with five sisters) has a full-bodied creative catalogue of printed and painted works. She has been exhibiting since 1979 and has no intention of stopping. “I’ve been in my studio 10 years after retiring from academia in 2006. There’s no hiding from the work when you are alone. It’s either a good success or a good fail!” she says.

Fogwell has created hundreds of linoleum blocks. Her “alphabet of images” is “archived into different draws”. She’s worked with installations, musicians, prominent artists such as Magaret Olley and Robin Wallace-Crabbe and has been invited to international biennials for print and the artist book in Poland, Belgium, Belgrade, France, London and South Korea.

Her next exhibition Elegance in Nature at Manyung Gallery Mt Eliza explores themes of ugliness and beauty, resilience and strength in nature and trees as our guardians. Both prints and oil paintings (on traditional Italian Gesso board) will be on show from early October onwards.
