Flourish Café in Frankston South will be serving Afghan takeaway food on Friday night to raise money for the city’s Afghan asylum seekers. Owner Maree Hutchins said: “I’ve been connected to the Afghan community in Frankston for many years and we want to support Afghan families arriving from Kabul.”
Maree is hosting the evening with Hamida Lutfi, pictured, a prominent member of Frankston’s Afghan community. Hamida was born and raised in Kabul, but due to the turmoil in Afghanistan she came to Australia in 1988 with her husband and daughter. A mother of four, Hamida works with community groups helping refugees settle into the community.
Hamida and her sister-in-law Maria Lutfi will be doing the cooking on Friday night, their menu featuring eggplant with tomato base sauce and yoghurt, lentil dahl, and butter chicken with rice and Afghan bread. All dishes are $25 a person; tasting platters are $30.
