NAIDOC (National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee) week is a time for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community on the Mornington Peninsula to celebrate Australia’s long living ancient culture.

“From the beginnings of early activism and advocacy for the Aboriginal community during a period of socio-cultural and political unrest and then social justice change, NAIDOC week offers the chance to come together and celebrate each year” says Mornington Peninsula Shire Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Officer and Heritage Archaeologist Adam Magennis.

This year the celebrations begin with a NAIDOC Dinner Dance at the Frankston Arts Centre on July 1 from 7pm. Monday 4 sees flag raising events at the Willum Warrain Aboriginal Association at 10 Pound Road Hastings and at the Frankston City Council Civic Centre on the corner of Young and Davey Streets. The Frankston ceremony will be held at 10.30am while the time for the Hastings ceremony is yet to be decided – Call Willum Warrain on 5979 1391 for confirmation. An Aboriginal Arts display entitled Edge of Creation by Baluk Arts runs from 11am until 1pm at the Frankston Arts Centre on Monday 4 and includes the launch of the Baluk Book with storytelling and book sales. Thursday 7 July sees a Frankston/Mornington Peninsula Family Fun Day.

There will also be traditional owners smoking ceremonies and cultural identity projects held over the week and elders will be taken to the annual Elders luncheon at the Aboriginal Advancement League in Thornbury.

NAIDOC week gives all members of the community the opportunity to participate in the spirit of reconciliation and social harmony. Let’s celebrate together.
