The topsail schooner Enterprize will be visiting the Mornington Peninsula over the summer months. Enterprize is a reproduction of the ship that brought the first British settlers in 1835, to start the settlement that was to become Melbourne. The original ship was built in Hobart in 1830 as part of the early coastal trading fleet’s of southern Australia. At that time most bulk cargo was transported by sea. Today’s Enterprize was built so that a significant part of Melbourne’s history would be preserved and accessible to the people of Victoria.
With educational programs for schools, youth sail training development opportunities for individuals and groups, sailing adventures as well as charters, overnight and longer voyages, Enterprize offers opportunities to experience living history and to see the Mornington Peninsula from the deck of the 1830’s type of vessel that explored the Mornington coastline in 1835, before finding the entrance to the Yarra River and the Freshwater Falls that provided the new settlement with water supply.
Enterprize was built using traditional methods and materials, with flax sails, hemp rigging dipped in Stockholm Tar, using tallow as a lubricant and recycled timbers she is as close as possible to the original ship. Enterprize was launched on 30 August 1997 and is the only square-rigged commercial sailing ship to be built in Melbourne for over 135 years.
Sailing from the newly reopened Mornington Pier, the Enterprize will conduct 1 hour day sails and 1½ hour evening sails during her weekend visits, as well as overnight voyages to Mornington and evening voyages back to Melbourne. Enterprize now gives people of all ages the opportunity to experience what life on board a nineteenth century sailing ship was like so that people of all ages can experience an exciting insight into the way life aboard was like in the 1830’s
