The CFA has warned against complacency as the Peninsula prepares for the coming fire season. “Just because we’re getting above-average rainfall at the moment, the key message we want to get across is don’t get complacent,” says Westernport CFA Group Officer David Breadmore.

“Make sure you have your fire plan ready; you’ve tested it and you’re happy with it,” David says. “We’re expecting a grass fire season as opposed to a bushfire season due to the above-average rainfall, but just because we’re not expecting an extreme fire season doesn’t mean an extreme fire season might not still occur. With increased rainfall, when the weather warms up we have accelerated growth and this leads to increased fuel load.”

“Clean your gutters, mow your grass, remove leaves and sticks around the property, prune back your garden beds, make sure you don’t have trees touching the house, and check your home and contents insurance to make sure it’s up to date. And it’s important that if you’re burning off, you register your burn-off. That saves volunteers being called out unnecessarily. We encourage people to clean up their properties and burn off – just advise us you’re going to do it.”

To register your burn-off, call 1800 668 511.
