Experienced drivers are needed to help supervise learners as part of the L2P program on the southern Peninsula.

Thanks to support from experienced volunteer drivers, Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has been helping learners who don’t have access to a supervising driver or vehicle. The council wants to recruit 10 new mentors who can work with young people to get the 120 hours of driving experience required to sit their licence test.

Mentor Chris Coster urged people to get involved and make a positive impact in the lives of young people. “L2P is an opportunity to make a meaningful contribution to the community. It makes me feel good knowing that I’m helping someone. I also find myself feeling younger and more in touch with the thinking and perspectives of young people by being connected in a mentor capacity.”

Chris said there was great satisfaction seeing the learners make progress and get their licence through the L2P program, which is funded by the Transport Accident Commission.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Sam Hearn said getting a driver’s licence was an integral part of gaining independence for young people and stepping into adulthood. “Having your licence leads to more employment and educational opportunities that are fundamental to our young people.”

Anyone wanting to become a mentor must have a full licence and be over 21. Mentors will be provided with full training and support and have all insurances covered by the council when volunteering in the role.
