“It’s more than just reading,” June said. “Book clubs can open your mind and your social circle.”
From her very first meeting she felt the warmth of the group. Members gathered in a relaxed setting – sometimes over a cup of tea, sometimes with a glass of wine in hand – to discuss the month’s chosen book. Each person’s perspective was valued, and conversations often stretched far beyond the pages.
“One of the most rewarding things is seeing quieter members slowly come out of their shell,” June said. “Over time, they become more confident and aren’t afraid to express strong opinions. Everyone gets a say, and everyone gets the chance to choose a book.”
The club’s format is simple but effective: meet monthly, share thoughts, and enjoy the companionship that naturally grows when people come together over a shared love of reading. Yet the impact is far greater.
In the bustle of daily life, book clubs encourage members to carve out time for reading, often introducing them to genres or authors they might never have discovered on their own. They offer intellectual stimulation, sparking debates about characters, plot twists and writing styles. But just as importantly, they create space for connection and belonging.
“Book clubs are as much about people as they are about books,” June said. “You laugh over characters, debate storylines, swap favourite passages … it turns reading into a shared experience.”
For June, the Ranelagh Book Club has become a cherished part of her social calendar, a place to nurture her passion for stories while deepening her ties to the community. Ranelagh Club itself is a community treasure, nestled in the Ranelagh Estate where it’s been part of Mount Eliza life for almost a century. With more than 2000 members, the club offers a wide range of social, sporting and family activities, all within a picturesque setting.
The book club is just one of many ways Ranelagh Club brings people together. Meetings are held on the last Wednesday of each month, with two time slots – 11.45am and 6.00pm – making it easy for members to fit reading and conversation into their schedules.
Whether you’re an avid reader or someone looking for a friendly introduction to new books and new people, the Ranelagh Book Club offers the perfect mix of literature, laughter, and local connection.
As June put it: “Joining was one of the best things I’ve done. Great stories are even better when you share them with great people.”
