The Rahona Valley Winery is an unexpected gem of a venue: a dark, glamorous space that offers warmth, welcome, and words that stir the soul. Despite being in an industrial estate, stepping inside feels like entering another world.
The cellar door creates an intimate environment for patrons, whether perched at a wine barrel or relaxing into a soft sofa. The excellent Rahona Valley wines and a selection of delicious food enhance the relaxed and decadent vibe.
Sip & Share began as the dream of Julia Pieters to create a safe, inclusive and beautiful space for spoken word and poetry-lovers to gather. Having spent time in the vibrant creative scenes of Melbourne, Julia wanted to bring some of that welcoming energy for diverse expression to the Peninsula. Now it’s become a cherished part of the creative calendar. With warm lighting, wine in hand, and a crowd that listens with heart, it’s part speak-easy, part story circle, and all community.
Each event features a stand-out guest poet, with names like Amanda Anastasi, Alicia Sometimes, Sean M. Whelan, Es Foong (aka Waffle Irongirl), and Nathan Curnow gracing the mic. These are poets with national profiles, powerful voices, and a gift for drawing in audiences. Just as vital to the night is the open mic, a chance for locals to take the stage and share their own stories, raw and real. The event is emceed by Amy Campion, whose role is to make everyone feel welcome and appreciated for the authentic beautiful souls we all are. Local favourites like Alan Pentland and Michael Pardy deliver performances that can be hilariously entertaining, and young newcomers have shared profound and deeply moving experiences that touch the soul.
“It’s not about being polished or perfect; it’s sharing what is real to you,” said host and organiser Dianne Gardiner. “Whether you’re reading a poem for the first time or you’re a seasoned performer, Sip & Share is a place where everyone is heard and celebrated.”
It’s the kind of place that surprises first-timers and keeps regulars coming back. And it’s growing. With feature poets now booked through to the end of the year, including the likes of Rex Letoa Paget in August and Sarah Temporal from NSW in October, the calendar is as diverse and vibrant as the crowd.
Bring your words, bring your friends, or simply bring your ears. Sip & Share is a little different, with something for everyone. Whether you love poetry and spoken word or it’s something entirely new to you, all are welcome here. Sip & Share is where poetry is as enjoyable and accessible as a glass of fine pinot.
