Scooter success

The Peninsula-bred champion, just months shy of his 20th birthday, carries his hometown roots with him as he conquers international competitions and films career-defining video parts that showcase his style.

Charlie’s fondest memories revolve around “just mucking around and swimming with mates at the beach or quarry” – quintessential Peninsula pastimes that shaped his easygoing approach to life. “Growing up on the Peninsula was cool, being so close to the beach,” he said.

His scooter journey began at age seven in a suitably modern way. “I used to just search up ‘BMX videos’ on YouTube, and one day a scooter video caught my attention and I was super-keen on it straight away.”  Local skate parks soon became his training grounds, with Mornington’s being the first he rode, followed by Mount Eliza when it was built.

“When I first started riding scooters, I was a ‘park rider’, which has a focus on skate park riding and competitions.” By his mid-teens he found “more of a passion for ‘street riding’, which has more of a focus on filming video parts and riding obstacles found out in the streets, such as handrails and stair sets”.

This evolution has led to impressive achievements, including his second place in the pro men’s street Australian championships and competing at the World Skate Games 2024 in Rome. His video work also stands among his proudest accomplishments. “I’m really hyped on my new Envy Scooters 2025 video; it took almost two years to film and is my best riding yet.”

The Peninsula community has played a crucial role in his development, with Charlie citing local legends like Max Peters, Juzzy Carter and Angus Varney as “huge inspirations and great mentors for me within scootering”, and he still enjoys riding at Mornington, Balnarring and Rosebud skate parks when home.  “The Peninsula doesn’t have amazing street spots but there are a few hidden gems here and there.”

His talent caught the attention of Envy Scooters in 2021, leading to a partnership he values. “Riding for Envy is a dream, and I’m forever grateful for their support and opportunities they bring me.”  The sponsorship has given him the chance to travel with his scooter to film and compete around Australia and the world. He also rides for S2 Loves You, with whom he has “been very fortunate to have a signature line of denim shorts with the brand”.

The world beckons as Charlie maps out his future in the sport he loves. Between competing against the world’s elite riders in Rome and spending months filming across Europe and the US, his passport is collecting stamps as quickly as he’s collecting praise. “I just want to film as many video parts and travel as much as I can.”

For the next generation of riders watching his meteoric rise, Charlie distils his philosophy into a simple but powerful mantra: “Just have fun.  There’s no point doing something unless you enjoy it.  Keep riding and keep practising.”

From Peninsula skate parks to the world championships, Charlie proves that plenty of grit can make dreams take flight on two wheels.
