Rest, recover and rebuild at Saltbush

A not-for-profit charitable organisation, Saltbush offers short-stay, self-contained accommodation to people experiencing hardship, whether it’s the result of illness, loss, trauma, or other challenging life circumstances.

In a peaceful coastal setting, Saltbush provides people who need it most a chance to breathe, to rest, and to reflect.  For individuals and families doing it tough, a few days away from the noise and pressure of everyday life can be a lifeline.  With warmth and dignity, Saltbush gives guests the space to restore their energy, enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings, and rest.

This winter, Saltbush is embarking on a much-needed transformation of its six accommodation cottages, and the community is invited to be part of the story.  The New Kitchens Project will see every cottage fitted with a new kitchen, replacing the originals that have served the community for more than 35 years.  We all know that a kitchen is the heart of any home, and for Saltbush guests these spaces are where cups of tea are made, simple meals are shared, and quiet moments of normalcy are rediscovered.

Thanks to the generosity of the Balnarring Community Bank, Saltbush now has six new Kaboodle kitchens donated via Bunnings Hastings.  A further financial contribution from a local donor is covering the costs of tiling and splashbacks.  It’s a brilliant start, but there’s still work to be done.

Saltbush is now calling for volunteers, tradespeople and supporters to help bring the project to life.  Whether you can wield a screwdriver, reconnect a cooktop, plumb in some pipes or simply spread the word, every contribution makes a difference.

“Volunteering for Saltbush means helping build something beautiful,” said CEO Maree Feutrill, who is coordinating the project.  “What may seem like a simple kitchen can for some people be a safe space for healing.  With enough hands, we hope to complete all six kitchens within 12 months or sooner.”

As the cost of living rises and winter sets in, demand for Saltbush’s services is growing.  A safe, quiet space, a warm room, and a few nights of peace can make a world of difference to someone when life is feeling overwhelming.  This project is a reminder that even small acts – whether it be a few hours of time, a donation, or a shared social post – can help change lives.

“What might seem like a small act to you can make a big difference in someone’s life,” Maree said.  “At Saltbush, we are building something wonderful together.”
