There’s no pressure, no tests, no exams; at U3A, the focus is on fun and friendship.
For empty-nesters, retirees and semi-retirees resolute in maintaining their sense of purpose, U3A represents an ideal opportunity. At its Frankston and Mornington classes, U3A’s timetables are filled with exciting subjects including philosophy, film appreciation, German language discussion, yoga, ukelele lessons, basic dressmaking, and creative writing. There really is something for everyone. Options differ between the two sites – hosted by volunteers, the sessions depend on their area of expertise – so it’s advisable to check first.
Claire Gardner has been affiliated with Frankston U3A for nearly 15 years both as a student and facilitator. She leads the creative writing class that, through the sharing of stories, offers an insight into the minds of attendees. “Participants want to be seen and heard,” Claire said. “They don’t want to be invisible.”
Here there’s a chance to slow down and speak their voice away from the hubbub of the general public, where they can often feel overlooked and drowned out. Without fear of judgment, the class produces magnificent pieces of writing. “I generally set a broad framework or suggest a prompt. What they then write is up to them.” Claire said she’s constantly amazed by the responses from their lifetimes of experience in all walks of life and all abilities.
Encouraged to share their thoughts on overcoming a ‘steep road’, one class member recalled the difficulty of leaving a job she’d known for 37 years and wondering how she would fill her days. Crediting U3A with helping her through, she said: “I have found beautiful people here. My head gradually peeped out of the hole until eventually I escaped it. So thank you, each and every one of you. U3A has been a lifeline for me.”
The power of connection is upheld at U3A, where friendships are buoyed by the excitement of regular social events, including excursions.
