Thanks to the bold vision of Barnacle Studios Collective and the tireless efforts of local artists and community members, the Broadway Theatre Restoration Project is breathing new life into this long-silent Art Deco gem. After more than 50 years in dormancy, the theatre is being reimagined as a space that brings people together through performance, visual arts, and shared creative experiences.
This transformation is breathing new life into the grand old building and reviving the creative community – and people who love the arts – as it rises to its former glory. With plans for a professional performance theatre, a continuously evolving visual art gallery, community workshops and inclusive events, The Broadway is shaping up as a vibrant destination for artists, audiences and the wider community.
“Revitalising The Broadway means the southern Peninsula can have the creative home it has long needed,” said Barnacle Studios co-founder and executive producer Sally Baillieu.
Rosebud and the surrounding towns have been calling out for accessible performing arts spaces for years. In fact, the Performing Arts Centre/Precinct Needs Analysis Report presented to Mornington Peninsula Shire in October 2022 identified Rosebud’s Wannaeue Place precinct as a prime location for a major performing arts centre. While the project was later placed on the back burner, The Broadway’s revitalisation provides an immediate, community-driven solution.
The impact is already noticeable. Dreamhouse Theatre Company, a not-for-profit group known for empowering young performers, is moving into The Broadway, bringing even more life and talent to the space.
There’s also The Wannaeue Window, a 24/7 public-facing art gallery in the theatre’s front window, supported by Community Bank Southern Peninsula. Every fortnight, a new local artist is featured, ensuring the lights never go out on creativity in Rosebud.
But like any grand production, it takes a cast of many to make the magic happen. The restoration project is calling on the community to help take this vision to the next stage. Donations, partnerships and volunteers are all needed to support critical upgrades and bring free community programs to life.
