A recent collaboration between Chisholm and Frankston City Council gave students the chance to respond to a real client brief, an opportunity that allowed graphic design student Will Kadwell to bring his new skills to life. His concept was selected for a public shopfront installation at local business Netfocus IT.
“The brief was open,” Will said. “They wanted the space to show their IT expertise, but also the people behind the tech.”
Will’s concept was a series of character-based illustrations where smart devices like computers and watches were brought to life with friendly, expressive faces. “I wanted to keep it simple and achievable,” he said.
The project pushed him creatively and gave him confidence. “At first I was stuck. I did heaps of research and looked at shopfronts, visual merchandising, anything I could find. Eventually I found something that clicked.”
Netfocus IT owner Liz McDonald was thrilled with the result. “He not only met my expectations, he also exceeded them,” Liz said. “Will brought personality to my brand. He understood how to give it energy.”
Will credits Chisholm with helping him turn his thinking into real-world results. “I went to uni and studied zoology a while ago but it wasn’t for me. Through Chisholm, I’ve worked on this project and now we’re designing a billboard for another client. That just wouldn’t have happened at uni.”
For students like Will, it’s not just about building skills; it’s about creating a future with real-world outcomes. When students pursue a new career, Chisholm offers the programs, practical experience and industry connections to help them get there.
