This gave way to a picturesque rendition of Debussy’s Quatre mélodies — his musical reflection focussed on Paul Verlaine’s poetry.
Then the excitement of To Ash from Embers, by young Australian Gabriella Vici, commissioned under Musica Viva for the auspices of the Hildegard Project, in support of women in composition.
The evening finished with Francaix, with Wind Quintet no. 1, a plethora of colours and articulations, through which the instruments once again blended gently, in sounds transporting the imagination.
The softly lit grey backdrop provided a subtle ambience for a performance met with tumultuous ovation.
