From farm gate to you By Liz Rogers

web.jpg

Hawkes Farm is passionate about providing fresh, seasonal produce to Peninsula people and beyond. The Hawkes family has been farming vegetables for six generations and specialises in growing potatoes, carrots, spring onions, strawberries and corn, while showcasing a range of Peninsula-made products they are proud to be associated with in their farm shop.

Evolving from a shed housing a few spuds and an honesty box to an amazing fresh produce store, you’ll find all their own home-grown paddock to plate produce plus Pure Peninsula Honey, Baker Boys bread, Main Ridge Dairy cheese, Cape Schanck Olive Oil, Mock Red Hill ciders and Red Hill Truffles inside. You’ll also find their famously scrumptious thrice-cooked crispy chips available on weekends from their food truck and cakes and coffee on offer seven days a week. Their Hawkes premium kipflers can be found at many gourmet restaurants on the Peninsula and in Melbourne.

Hawkes Farm opens its gates to the public three times a year in a quest to give guests a glimpse of farm life. Pop on down on January 19 to enjoy a tractor ride, some vegetable picking, food truck treats, a jumping castle and more. This is a great opportunity to give the kids a taste of living on the land while supporting Peninsula growers from the ground up —and it’s a fun day out too. This dedicated to distinction vegetable farm won bronze in the 2018 RACV VTIC Awards for Excellence in Food Tourism and loves letting the public know what it does. Farm tours for kinders, schools and community groups are available on request.

Make your garden stand out this spring

web.jpg

With spring arriving and the weather improving, it’s time to get back into the garden.  If you are looking to make some long-lasting improvements then Steelscape garden edging or garden rings might be just what you need.

Joe from Steelscape makes corten garden edging. Stylish and durable, it will make your garden look really professional.  The edging is made from 100% Aussie corten steel and is designed to last.  Standard is 100mm high, but you can get it in any size.  It comes with reo bar pegs as stakes, making it easy to install.  But it gets better than that:  Joe can make kits (different shapes and sizes) at no extra charge if you supply an accurate floorplan.  Corners, waves and other shapes are no problem!

If you are looking at raised garden beds, something to protect your trees, or perhaps you live on a sloping block, the garden rings and custom steel walls can add a little class to your property.  Steelscape can make garden rings of any size for your garden.  Or if you have an obscure garden space, Joe can fabricate something unique for you.

Joe can also make retaining wall cladding, which adds something special to your garden. Designed to go over concrete walls, the rust patina of the corten steel will really stand out among the green.

Linda loves eggs

web.jpg

Linda Napolitano loves her eggs and is the driving force behind Somerville Egg Farm. Starting out on the family farm 40 years ago, collecting eggs before school to running the office as it is today, Linda co-ordinates the supply and delivery of farm-fresh eggs to supermarkets, cafes and the public via the shop.

Passionate about the environment and animal welfare, Linda ensures everything on the farm runs to the highest standard. “If the girls aren’t happy then they won’t lay, so we make sure they are very comfortable. The only thing they don’t get is a latte every morning,” she laughs. Customers often come in and tell Linda how wonderful their cakes are because the eggs they get from the farm shop are so fresh with a lovely golden yolk.

Bold move pays dividends for T’Gallant

IMG_1713.JPG

Nestled among the rolling hills of the Mornington Peninsula, T’Gallant is the home of pinot grigio in Australia. The T’Gallant story began in 1990 when it championed the planting of pinot grigio vineyards in the region. This was considered a bold move at the time; nonetheless, almost 30 years on, T’Gallant is renowned for creating a range of expressions of the now immensely popular grape variety - from crisp and zingy pinot grigio styles to the rich, aromatic and luscious pinot gris – alongside a range of other wines with vibrant personalities.

The T'Gallant Cellar Door and pizzeria is located on a former apple orchard in Main Ridge. Join the lively Cellar Door team for a tasting and they can show you the differences between pinot grigio and pinot gris wines. Also available to try are sparkling moscatos and proseccos, crisp rosés and fruit-driven pinot noirs, among other food-friendly wines.

If you’re after a bite of lunch, the T’Gallant Spuntino Bar is the birthplace of Roman-style pizza on the Peninsula, serving up a menu of classic Italian and provincial-style dishes seven days a week. On weekends, the outdoor bar serves wine straight from the tap and an array of musicians perform on the verandah.

With a bustling outdoor piazza overlooking the T'Gallant Estate vineyard, wine tastings seven days a week and a mouthwatering menu, T’Gallant is the perfect place to gaze and graze on the Peninsula. It’s open for wine tastings seven days from 10am-5pm and the pizzeria is open from 11.30am-3pm mid-week and until 4pm on weekends.

Families flock to backyard hens

Bella_With_Hens.jpg

Many Melbourne families are discovering just how much joy a small flock of backyard hens can bring to their homes. With no permit needed to keep them on the Peninsula, it’s now easier than ever!

After five years running Talking Hens in Keysborough, Jason, Giuliana and daughter Bella (pictured) have moved the business to Main Ridge. Passionate about their hens and their customers, Jason and Giuliana continually look for ways to overcome any problems and provide better products and services.

From their farm they sell quality Hy-Line Brown hens, highest grade chicken feed and a range of related products. Hy-Line hens are not only one of the very best laying breeds in the world, they’re also one of the friendliest. Customers rave about how quickly they have become much-loved pets and how their children adore them. Of course, having eggs as a daily source of high-quality protein, minerals and vitamins is also something their hens are expert at producing.

While the Hy-Line hen is able to lay an egg a day, this can only be achieved with a tailored, high-quality feed. Fortunately, Giuliana’s father, Agostino, created an amazing laying hen diet with the help of Dr Hector Karunajeewa, who was a leading poultry diet researcher with the Animal Research Institute in Werribee at the time.

Using the family’s “secret” recipe, Talking Hens now sends its chook feed Australia-wide. It also works closely with Peninsula vet Dr Grant Richards in the development of a range of natural hen care products that it sells. Selling only the highest quality products, Talking Hens happily provides a 100 per cent money-back guarantee - which is even extended to its hens!

Give your garden the winning edge

Unknown.jpeg

Steelscape is a Mornington Peninsula-based company specialising in corten steel products, and one of its latest products is contemporary garden edging.

Joe Taranto from Steelscape explains. “I believe in using 100 per cent Australian-made corten steel for all of my work as I believe it is superior to other steel on the market and keeps Aussies in jobs.”

This edging stands the test of time and will give your garden the contemporary design that will set it apart from others; it is rustic yet elegant. The standard size is 2.4m x 3mm and it’s easy for you to pick up and handle, reducing the need for special equipment to transport or install it.

Steelscape garden edging is modular and can be easily sized for different layouts. At one end of each piece are two holes to allow fixing to the next piece or wall. Each piece comes with a custom-made stake made from 12mm reo bar with a small hook welded on to the top to minimise visual interference.

Unlike other alternatives on the market, there is no rolled top edge because it is thick enough to retain its strength and it has no sharp edges.

The edging can be ordered to any height, but standard is 100mm.   If you need a corner, a circle or a wave design, these are all achievable or can be pre-done for you. Complete garden kits are available and can be custom-made to suit individual installations. All that’s required for this is an accurate ground/floor plan.

Make your garden complete with this new, contemporary garden edging that is cost-effective and easy to install.

Steelscape also creates one-off items such as fire pits, sculptures, 3D letters and numbers, furniture, business signage and custom-made pieces to suit individual clients.

By developing physical skills, the program contributes to every part of a young child’s life.  At Playball, a child is coached in a positive way and encouraged to develop life skills that in turn improve confidence and self-image. Playball classes are age-specific and Playball has developed separate learning material for each age group according to development milestones for that specific age. This ensures the learning content is just right for your child and the stage they are at.

Brilliance in timber and steel

IMG_5315a.JPG

Joe’s passion for steel has grown over the years and developed to now include timber, which is reflected in the beautiful work he creates today. He has spent thousands of hours learning his craft and perfecting it to a fine art. Everything he does is unique and created with love and dedication.

Increasingly, Joe is focusing on sculptural furniture, which combines his industrial design skills with his love of unique art pieces. He works very closely with his clients to create something truly unique and memorable.  There is no compromise in quality with his artwork - the process from inspiration to finished product normally takes one to three months - and Joe will also install the piece in your home, garden or gallery.

Joe is very passionate about using only 100 per cent Australian-made Corten steel and Australian timber.  He sources timber from all around Australia and highlights the natural patterns and flaws to the best advantage he can.  Recent pieces have also included local custom-made glass that helps to accentuate the design.

Joe currently has one of his pieces, a table, in Inspire Gallery in Mornington.  He is planning his own exhibition in 2018.

If anyone is interested in getting a bespoke piece of unique art, Joe is offering 20 per cent off if you book in spring, so call now.
